A library is a place for comfort, safety, and connection. When asking students what they want to see in the library many expressed how they simply wish to use the space as somewhere comfortable to read, write, and draw.
As a Title I school, our campus serves hundreds of students who come from a socioeconomically disadvantaged background. Due to this it can be difficult to acquire newer book sets, library and art supplies. By adding fan favorite literature and necessary book keeping tools to my project it will ensure that students will be able to enjoy what they checkout but also keep books clean and safe so their peers may enjoy them for many years to come.
Our school takes pride in being a part of the Turnaround Arts program, which celebrates creative and artistic endeavors and achievement year round. As a librarian I am highly encouraged to not only advocate for excellent literacy and research skills but also encourage students who wish to express themselves through all types of artistic media. With this in mind I added coloring and drawing supplies to my project to put in my brand new "art zone," a section of the library dedicated to students who enjoy creating visual art.
Additionally, I decided to add some new furniture like beanbags and a new rug as the items we currently have are run down. The new furniture additions will help me achieve my goal of making it a comfortable, relaxing space for kids to enjoy.
With the items in my project I hope to achieve their wishes and finally open the space for all students to explore, create and have fun in a place where imagination knows no bounds.
