By having "The Book Thief" in my classroom, I can instill a love for learning and the spark of a flame that a book can create. This book talks about the natures in which a group of people were stripped of everything they hold dear. Students these days take books for granted as well as each other. "The Book Thief" would allow for me to integrate a fiction novel with nonfiction readings about what really happens when too much power is given to those who are only seeking to glorify themselves. Students and I can discuss how the past is not so different from the future through lessons on censorship and containment of speech and actions. On top of uniting both fiction and nonfiction, this text would allow for me to work alongside the social studies teacher for integrated lessons and planning.
