Toolkits are multi-faceted, giving students ownership of their learning and creating an environment for discourse, problem-solving, and gameplay. Toolkits grow with the students as they add new tools of the trade and discard tools they have outgrown. Students keep 'their' toolkits from grade k-4, making the toolkits a personal item for learning.
Students use toolkits to bridge gaps between grade levels. In kindergarten, using 3D shapes to touch and to make comparisons is much more powerful than looking at a 2D representation of a 3D shape. Also, using magnetic numbers to order or match with quantities leans into the concrete learning that students need at this age. Solid shapes and magnetic numbers are two of the many tools students have access to and ownership of.
By donating to my project, you will help students make connections in math by helping them see the fluidity and flexibility of this core content; you will be giving them voice and choice over their math learning.
