In the past years, we have had many newcomers coming into the classroom. While some students have had opportunities to grow and learn in English, some have been affected by the recent virtual classrooms in growing further in their English language capabilities. However, any literature in any language is beneficial to practicing their comprehension skills. But the options are very limited at the time. At this moment, my classroom doesn't have many Spanish options and the library has been affected by unreturned literature.
Students will have the opportunity to read books in their native language and be interested in reading to next be able to step into English books with more passion. Students can work on comprehension skills such as inferring, making predictions, author's purpose, context clues, etc. with books that they can understand and be entertained knowing that they are there for their benefit.
Newcomers should be able to have opportunities to grow in literature by reading comfortably and learning skills that they can later transfer into working with literature in English. This will definitely be easier now that they are in person and can learn their strategies while being hands-on.
