These books will enhance discourse, foster critical thinking, and offer students a more complete understanding of history. I push my students to view history and present-day issues through multiple perspectives every day. It can be challenging to find sources that are accessible to students at different academic levels but also extremely thought-provoking and engaging. With this class set of books, I will be able to provide my students with a version of history that challenges more commonly heard narratives and perspectives and will enable them to more fully understand some of the social, economic, and political challenges facing America today.
The students I teach are diverse in their cultures, lived experiences, and perspectives- and they deserve a text that mirrors themselves and their place in American history. They will have a chance to hear the voices, stories and learn of the contributions of people who look like them and their families.
With these new books, my students will be exposed to a critical view of the past and better prepared to grapple with the issues they will face for the rest of their lives. In 9 years of teaching, this is the first "textbook" that I can see my students loving, and that will help show them America's history through the eyes, minds, and hearts of those who have for so long been left out-and whose stories so desperately need to be heard.
