Providing students within my Special Education classroom choices, such as flexible seating options, helps create a stronger sense of independence in their lives, especially when they consistently rely on intensive supports from others on a daily basis. Not only will my students have flexible seating options available to them, but these different seating options are also a great way for students to work on requesting items (verbal or nonverbal) to increase their use of communication.
There will be 1-2 areas within the classroom where these additional seating options will be provided, while creating opportunities to learn and display appropriate social skills with one another, learn how to share and take turns, make choices to increase independence, and to get moving around within the classroom as most of the students stay within the contained classroom majority of their school day. Please help me assist my students in reaching their true potential!
