My 4th and 5th grade struggling readers receive explicit decoding, reading comprehension, and spelling instruction in my Literacy Lab every day. They are reluctant readers, are painfully self-conscious, and they are working on getting used to leaving their classrooms, teacher, and friends for a significant part of day to learn with me.
To help with the latter issue, I want to make them feel like they have a second home while at our school and that is my Literacy Lab. In my lab they have tables, but they have no area or compartment to hold their reading materials. The seat sack would give them a better sense of community and belonging in my classroom. Having their materials organized and within reach will save precious instructional minutes and contribute to a more welcoming student-centered environment.
