Since there is no air conditioning in my school building, my second-floor classroom heats up quickly as it gathers heat throughout the day and reaches temperatures of over 85 degrees Fahrenheit after lunch.
These high temperatures create an environment that is harmful for physical health and learning. Having hot, stuffy classrooms is unsafe for students' physical safety. During the pandemic, students are required to have masks on. When classrooms are that warm, students tend to take off their masks for a breath of fresh air, potentially increasing exposure to COVID for themselves and others.
Without air conditioning, the classroom is also not conducive to learning. Students take more frequent water breaks and struggle to remain focused on the material at hand. The reality is that providing air conditioning offers students the environment they need to focus on their learning which goes beyond being comfortable -- it's a racial justice issue as we look at how heat can impact learning and which students have access to well-resourced, air-conditioned schools and which do not (https://www.bu.edu/wheelock/dr-josh-goodman-its-time-to-say-goodbye-to-the-hot-and-stuffy-classroom/).
Teaching and learning in a hot classroom is difficult and unsafe. Please help me make my classroom cooler so that we can focus our efforts on learning and instruction rather than getting through the heat!
