In our classroom, we strive to create an environment of mutual respect and acceptance of diversity – a place where curiosity about the world and a love of learning is fostered each day. A classroom community that respects each individual and appreciates others’ viewpoints. A good book can help kids understand what it's like for people who don't share their race, religion, abilities, or socioeconomic status. Diverse books help students develop awareness and empathy.
The goal of this project is to create a classroom library in which all students can see themselves in the pages of a book. When students identify with a character or the plot, a connection to the story develops. As a result, students are more motivated to read. Students also need to have access to books that include characters and events that are different from what they have experienced so that they can explore diversity and culture.
In recent years, there has been an abundance of quality literature published - picture books, graphic novels, and narrative non-fiction texts. Stories that I want to read as a mentor text to spark conversations about inclusion, equity, and racial justice. Stories that students can read independently or with a partner. Stories that empower students. Stories that provide insights as to what it's like to be someone else. Stories that emphasize the importance of compassion and acceptance. Stories that students will hold close to their hearts.
