Imagine you haven’t been in an in-person math classroom in a year and half. You’ve had inconsistent internet and technology access and attempting to learn math in a completely new way virtually. On top of that, you have a learning disability.
RESILIENCE.
That’s what makes my kids still show up. This project will create a small group instruction area in the classroom. Many of my students have special needs and will benefit greatly from small group instruction. This whiteboard table will also engage them. Many times, eighth grade special needs students feel discouraged in math. They feel like they can’t do it. They are afraid to make mistakes. A whiteboard table will give them the space to ask questions in a smaller, safe environment where mistakes are encouraged (and easily erased). The wobble stools will provide appropriate sensory input to my students with attentional and sensory needs. Flexible seating, such as wobble stools, have been shown to improve student’s ability to attend on instruction. The large assortment of dry erase markers will allow us to create colored visual models to improve conceptual understanding.
