My goal for all students is to leave our classrooms feeling more confident in who they are as people. However, I also feel like with this growth in confidence we will build a level of civic-mindedness about how it is important to treat people both inside and out of the classroom. Included in this project are many books about our feelings and emotions, friendship, heroes, and basic kindness. These were carefully chosen to serve as a catalyst for conversations. Often, real-life situations are difficult to discuss, however when those same situations are presented in a story format, this lends itself to having meaningful conversations. The pets are something we started last year to promote good citizenship. I can pick students, or the students can nominate others by submitting a write-up about why that student is a good citizen. When picked, those students are allowed to adopt a pet for their desk. These pets (animal erasers) are something they build homes for, create scenes for, write about, and in general just love. The improvement in our classroom unity and citizenship was remarkable and our goal is to continue this success.
