As a teacher of students acquiring English, I know that the rates of learning are influenced by multiple factors including an individual’s educational background, learning style, cognitive style, motivation, and personality.
Refugee and immigrant children who had very different educational opportunities, develop differently and have unique needs in regards to learning socio-emotional skills. They need more resources including the ones that decrease their anxiety and help them stay motivated. I use Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports as an important part of my teaching. PBIS is based on teaching appropriate behavior, intervening early before issues escalate, using research-based interventions, and monitoring student progress. Small rewards are used for behavior modification.
I am looking forward to being able to provide my students with books that would help them learn to read in English and spark a life-long interest in reading.
