The requested books will be used for literature circles for sophomores and seniors. Literature circles promote cooperative learning because students rely on each other to comprehend the text and questions raised during reading. They also allow students to claim ownership over their learning, which leads to deeper engagement and increased decision-making. Literature circles are great options during the pandemic when school so often has to go virtual, because it's much easier to facilitate discussion on Zoom with groups of three to four rather than the whole class. Finally, literature circles are often more fun than whole class novels, because they offer more opportunity for debate and discussion.
Sophomores will be able to choose between several novels in a dystopian literature unit, and seniors will have the option to choose between five autobiographies in a memoir unit. They will be placed in small groups of 3-5 students and will, for the most part, be able to read at their own pace. This is ideal for these unprecedented pandemic times when students are so often quarantined- even if they are at home, they will still be able to participate and keep up with their literature circles. Reading will be done both in class and at home, but most of class time will be reserved for reflective discussion and debate. Students will also create mini-projects together in their group, and each member will have a role they are responsible for (keep the rest of the group on task, lead group discussion, record questions, find quotes, etc.).
The chairs were requested to provide flexible seating when participating in literature circles, and the white board will be used for jotting down group discussion, questions, and quotes.
