These materials will help my students (reluctant readers and veteran bookworms alike) to dive into literature and discourse after a full year-and-a-half of remote learning. Many students have expressed that they would value more diversity in our reading materials, and this book list would give them the opportunity to explore a broad swath of stories and perspectives at their own disclosure.
These books will act as the anchor of a rich, diverse classroom library for my students to explore. I chose these books with my students in mind after conferencing with them for recommendations in genre, author, and even specific titles. Additionally, as a fine arts magnet school, many of our students are very talented artists; the graphic novels included in my project are intended to engage my students in both visual and textual narrative storytelling. My hope is that each of the titles on this book list can serve as a point of entry (or re-entry) to the wonderful world of literature for my students.
