When teaching science in 5th grade, we learn about water and its important role in absolutely everything we do. “A Long Walk to Water” is an amazing book that helps students relate to not only the Syrian Refugee Crisis but also to water and its availability around the world. The book ends and leaves students wanting so much more. The great thing about this novel is that it is based on a true story and the main character is the founder of Water for South Sudan. There are countless resources and ways to help on your local community available to help students continue their learning and grow their interest! This book would be the perfect addition to my Science curriculum and allow me to support student reading fluency and comprehension within the science classroom with my four rotations of students.
