I teach a language and literature course in an International Baccalaureate program. This curriculum and course material goes far beyond the bounds of traditional novels, poems and chalk & talk pedagogy. The first piece of material we are working with is Persepolis, a contemporary graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi. Additionally, in this unit my students will be analyzing other visual texts like print ads, public service announcements, posters for film and music, comic strips, political cartoons and travel brochures. The curriculum requires such diverse, multimedia supplemental material for each and every unit. At the end of this course, my students will be sitting for various formal assessments where they will have to both speak and write at length about visual texts. Apart from sharp critical thinking skills and open mindedness, the goal is to earn college credit in high school.
A projector, pointer, and stand will not only allow my students to study visual texts collaboratively, but also practice the invaluable professional skill of giving presentations. At the moment, our classroom operates with a lot of black and white printouts, and shared PDF's and links on the online classroom which then go without access during class time. A projector will import so much material into the time they spend with me and their peers. As mentioned previously, it will also give students a chance to practice sharing their ideas with others in a collected, organized and formal way.
