Novels are novels, and reading is reading. Graphic novels have exciting and complex plots, characters, and conflicts. The plots have twists and turns. Characters are developed and dynamic. Conflicts are presented, unwound, and resolved like they are in other texts. These books also help bridge the gap from picture books to chapter books.
Reluctant readers and those students who learn differently will be met exactly where they are, and develop a positive association with books. These graphic novels will combine student choice with effective reading practice, so students are implementing reading skills and strategies without realizing it. Their test scores will soar as students are able to take home books they like and take AR tests with success. Their confidence will blossom and we will see a shift in our academic success.
We do not want budget to be an obstacle for the reading experiences that will set the foundation for their future learning. My number one goal is to promote a love for reading among all of my students. Graphic novels are the tools needed to accomplish this.
