Obtaining real world skills is a vital objective in all scholastic education. My scholars develop a deep motivation to become successful professionals in the medical field, however, the challenge often remains in fully illustrating the exceptionally broad scope of what reaching such success involves. Medical Microbiology is a branch of science encompassing the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases and plays a crucial role in contemporary healthcare.
In providing the necessary space and materials to safely manipulate microbes in the classroom, I offer scholars the opportunity to experience potential career options they may not otherwise naturally consider. The products I selected for my scholars provide a snapshot of basic microbiology skills used in medical laboratories including plating, staining, identifying, and visualizing affects of various antibiotics. This project not only develops a solid foundation of laboratory skills, but enriches the broader high school experience while promoting critical thinking and scientific reasoning that are of great use to scholars throughout life beyond the classroom.
