My students create bioplastics from a variety of plant starches so they are able to compare strength and flexibility using data they collect. The analysis of data will help students consider appropriate applications for the different plastics they create based on the unique properties of the samples.
My students need digital calipers and c clamps to allow them to collect data on various bioplastics.
Students will research other household materials that could be used as additives to strengthen samples and discuss advantages and disadvantages of replacing plastic products made from fossil fuels while learning how to use scientific tools to analyze samples.
Students will be emerged in the design process while simultaneously learning about monomers, polymers, biodegradable vs compostable, biomass sources, tensile strength and more!
