Having these types of books will genuinely show the students that I want and will do what it takes to bring in fresh materials. I want to give my students all my life experiences. I want to bring them to places they may never see, and though that is not realistic, the power of stories and harboring a classroom that is open to them, quiet, and a sanctuary away from their lives away from school to be a safe space to explore literature.
Having the books that students want to read can produce lifelong learners and pull some of our students out of a vicious low education cycle that is in some of their homes.
When my students read in class and like what they read, they pass our state tests. When a mom called me crying because she loved how much her son was reading and that he gave his first SOL, I knew I was a lifelong educator. Would you please help my students with their class library?
