Our life science unit emphasizes the study of ecosystems and the structures and adaptations that allow animals to survive in their natural environment. An aquarium allows students to observe animals such as snails and small fish, as well aquatic plants, to note changes in the environment for a period of several weeks or throughout the year. An aquarium maintains the health of the plants and animals by allowing for the control of the cleanliness and temperature of the water and by creating a small ecosystem that is as close as possible to their natural environment. Students can note specific structures in animals (such as fins, tails, and gills) and plants (such as roots, stems, leaves, flowers, leaves, and seeds) that help them to thrive and reproduce.
