Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During academic work times (2 straight hours in our current school schedule with back to back reading and math blocks), it is extremely difficult for students to maintain engagement with their work. Currently my students are only given the seating option of a traditional chair, giving them limited opportunity to move and release energy. It is proven through many research studies that physical activity and movement are directly influential on student engagement and cognitive abilities. Making sure students are comfortable in their seating choice by giving them the flexibility to move is also an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about when they can handle it and when movement may be a distraction. During this time they are more productive and motivated.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a flexing seating choice.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The wobble stools will allow students to sit at desks but will still allow some movement. These will be extremely beneficial for some students that just need to get the wiggles out. They will be able to control their needs while still maintaining an active classroom participant role.
