This novel will bring to life the perspective of the native tribes of Virginia who were forever changed by the arrival of James Town colonists.
We will combine our Language Arts study of point of view with our Social Studies exploration of the James Town Colony. The story is told through the eyes of an eleven-year-old orphaned peasant who ultimately befriends two native youths, thus understanding the impact of the English settlers on the tribes in the region.
My students will deepen their social emotional skills through this text, particularly empathy and respect. Based on primary source documents, this novel offers a culturally responsive presentation of colonization of America that I am excited to share with my students.
