The use of calming tools is a must have for the kiddos placed in my classroom. Calming tools and sensory items such as Cando TheraPutty, Bouncyband Wiggle, Wobble Chair Feet, a Calming Cuddle Ball, chew necklaces, and squeeze balls help them focus in class so they are able to learn, de-escalate when upset or angry, and receive the sensory input they seek.
Manipulatives are extremely desired by my students which is a helpful motivator that pushes them to attend to lessons and engage in learning. Manipulatives like magna-tiles, Play-doh, Legos, and building sets also allows students to exercise their creativity and minds.
Building social skills is also a high need for my students. Having other ways to express themselves with Lego Build Me Emotions, manipulatives, and paints is helpful. These items also allow students to practice appropriate interactions with peers by sharing, using kind words, and working together.
