I am blessed to serve a school where I have the opportunity to do individual and group counseling each and every day. Having a large rug will allow me to facilitate circle time with students, which will lead to better community in my counseling groups. It will also allow younger students to participate in play therapy on my floor. Having a small rug will allow me to make my individual counseling area more cozy, and I hope it will help students feel like they are at home in my office.
My goal is that adding more cozy items to my office will allow students to feel like they have a home and a safe place while they are at school. Having a floor lamp will allow me to cut fluorescent lighting during individual and group sessions, which will help students feel calm and like they can relax when they are in my office. Finally, the office chair will allow for an additional seating option for me and for students. Currently, I have a couch and a lime green chair; the couch is wonderful, while the green chair has a hole in the bottom! That's the one I'm hoping to replace.
Maslow's hierarchy of needs tells us that our needs for warmth and safety need to be met before we can meet our needs for love, belongingness, and accomplishment. I hope that with a counseling office that feels warm and safe, I can help students get at some of those higher level needs during their time with me.
