Many of my students are huge anime fans, so reading a manga series is very appealing! (Manga is Japanese animation; manga is the print version.) Once I get a book in their hands, any book that sparks their interest, they are much more likely to continue reading.
Having long lasting series (some go up to 75 volumes) means kids can grow in confidence and always have a new book ready to go.
Manga, which is rich in visual language, can be a fantastic way to get reluctant readers interested in reading. Studies in Japan have shown that reading manga helps readers to develop reading comprehension and critical thinking skills, particularly in non-traditional learners, such as those with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
