I am requesting clay, glazes, and shelving for our pottery/ceramics unit. I have also asked for some watercolors and watercolor paper to use to do sketches/washes of what the students will design.
This project covers the Nevada Visual Arts Content Standards (NVACS) at all grades levels, especially intermediate grades three through five. The standards for CREATING, PRESENTING, RESPONDING, and CONNECTING are required at each grade level for our art curriculum. Students create a piece, present it to the class, respond (critique) to each other's work, and connect what they know about prior learning (i.e., the Elements of Art) and how they used it in their piece. Grade level objectives and CCSD objectives will be met as well (3)P.9, (4)P.9, (5)P9 "Produce a ceramic/mixed media object using varied media techniques and processes" and (3)9.b, (4)9.b, (5)9.b "Pottery: Create a functional vessel with a purpose."
These standards were not met during COVID-related learning due to lack of resources available to the underserved students in our community. One of the first things students asked when they came back to the classroom was "When are we going to use clay?!"
Funding for new clay, glazes, and shelves to dry the pieces would enable my students to have a tactile and meaningful learning experience!
