Students in grade K-2 are just learning how to identify emotions and build their tool kit for handling difficult emotions and situations. Many students come in to school with lots of trauma and stress and have a hard time transitioning in to the learning environment. They need to learn how to identify their feelings, express them appropriately and develop the necessary coping skills for all.
Mindfulness programs have been proven to help develop emotional and cognitive resilience and long-term overall improved mental health. By teaching these skills to students in primary grades we are giving them a key component to self-awareness and emotional regulation. The ability to self-regulate will increase their interpersonal relationships and academic success.
Teachers are also constantly faced with the overwhelming needs of their students. Having a mindfulness project that is school-wide will benefit the students and staff on a daily basis. The entire school community can engage in these practices to help everyone improve their well-being.
