Rocking chairs are valuable tools in elementary classrooms, and allow students to seek sensory input that can help them to calm themselves or stimulate themselves. Many of my students experience trauma at home or in their community and providing ways for them to self-regulate their bodies and feelings means the difference between empowering and disempowering themselves.
By giving students coping mechanisms, such as rocking themselves and a sit and spin to self-soothe, we increase the students' sense of self-control and help them to gain self-regulatory practices they can choose to you in the future.
