I teach adjudicated youth at a lockdown facility. These students have a lot of behavioral and emotional trauma. I have been using various seating options in my class for several years and find that the students who need to move around to do their work benefit from these chairs. In addition, many of my students find the movement from chairs helps them deal with day-to-day issues. Therefore, the chairs will only be used in my classroom.
There are many benefits to sitting on active seating, like improved posture and muscle tone, sensory input and energy building, and increased blood flow. Many of these students cannot sit through a seven-hour school day. When they come to my room with active seating, it gives them a chance to move around and get their wiggles out during the day.
