Based on my 30+ years of teaching in early childhood, we've noted that our students come to us with varying levels of pre-readiness skills. These include phonemic awareness, beginning sounds, fine motor development, letter and number recognition, writing support and social emotional skills. Building a strong foundation for early learning for both our English speakers and our English language learners, that are developmentally appropriate, set the foundation for all future learning. While our district does have a designated curriculum, we do not have a specific curriculum for writing. So, every teacher teaches writing in their own way. Which can be a challenge for our little scholars.
Learning Without Tears, a program, directly correlated to Nevada state standards that provides direct instruction for early learning, readiness skills. From how to hold the writing tools and where to start writing, the program along with its materials encourages and supports multi-sensory learning, that our students currently benefit from as I have purchased some of these materials myself. These resources provide opportunities for hands-on learning, a necessary skill in early childhood.
Studies show a direct correlation between high quality, early learning opportunities and school readiness skills, specifically writing and reading. These resources will build a strong foundation for our students that will stay with them for years to come.
