My 6th graders are full of energy and incredibly active. Alternative seating will support them in harnessing their energy in a positive way. Many of them rock back and forth in their chairs or click pens because they have displaced energy. Alternative seating would provide a safer and less disruptive way for students to direct their energy. Alternative seating provides sensory input, comfort, and promotes movement. All of this works to create more focused and engaged learners.
Having alternative seating options will also provide students with greater agency. They have a choice over their environment and can choose a seat where they can be successful. They can change how they are sitting and where they sit as they need. This small change to our classroom will immensely benefit the needs of my students.
