After a year and a half at home, students are more antsy and anxious than ever before. With flexible seating in my classroom, I will be able to meet their most basic needs of safety and comfort before building on the missed learning they could not receive during the last two years. According to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, students can't learn if they are anxious or stressed in the learning environment.
If students are able to choose the type of seat and location of the room they are in, they will be able to advocate for themselves and their needs, get their fidgets out and focus solely on learning. Once this need is met, I will be able to best focus on all SS and writing standards that they need for 7-8th grade. For example, with lap desks, students will work on their writing skills (SS.6-8.EWC.8 Construct organized explanations for various audiences and purposes using evidence and reasoning) in a quiet place of their choosing in multiple areas around the classroom allowing them to work to bridge the gaps that were created in the last two years.
