Reading and writing are some of the core fundamentals students must master in order to thrive. Providing my students with a modified environment that satisfies their individual needs is crucial for their success in the classroom. For some, having a fidget to hold while participating in group reading sessions is the key to staying engaged. For others, it is having a safe and stimulating space in the classroom where they can destress and work on writing assignments. Many require constant reinforcement for appropriate behaviors and academic achievements and thrive on a rewards system. Post-COVID, many students have lost motivation to engage in tangible activities, which I hope to rekindle and reinforce by providing them with unique reinforcers and classroom setting.
The resources I have requested for students will help them in various ways. The chosen books have been requested by my students and will be used during partner reading time in which the students are working on improving their reading and comprehension levels in accordance with goals as listed on their IEPs. The notebooks, quick write prompts, and other writing supplies I have added to my list will help them practice their writing skills. Lastly, modifying their classroom space is key in helping them thrive during lessons and worktime. My students all have unique needs, some experience high sensitivity to lighting, while others simply need a space to decompress due to high anxiety levels. For many, transitioning from online academic platforms to in-person settings has been extremely challenging. The resources I have requested will help ease some of the anxiety they are experiencing by providing them with content they are motivated to explore and a classroom they feel safe in.
