My students work best when they have choice and responsibility in their own learning. Allowing students to move around the classroom throughout the day lets them work together and find spaces that work best for them. My students like to sit on the floor in order to get closer to the board, sit with a partner, or have a quiet space away from peers. The lap desks and classroom rug I have requested will help make floor seating more comfortable and productive. This is especially important this year, as some students especially need more time with their peers after over a year apart, while others have gotten used to being able to sit where they like during distance learning. The classroom rug will also help us build our classroom community as we take whole-group learning to the carpet.
Students also learn best when they are motivated by getting to choose their own engaging activities. I will use the math folder games and puzzles as centers during small group math instruction as well as independent work for early finishers. The math folder games and puzzles will give my students highly engaging options for standards-based practice when they finish their assigned work in class. These games allow students to practice all 3rd grade math standards in a way that is fun and exciting. They will also give opportunities to practice 2nd grade math standards they may not have mastered due to COVID interruptions during their 2nd grade year. The IQ puzzles will encourage students to think about things in new ways and build their logic skills.
I am excited to see my students become even more excited and motivated to learn by having more choice in their seating and centers!
