Over 80% of our Elementary School students are Hispanic. Most of those families speak Spanish at home. While our Hispanic culture is musically rich, our students are very 'shy' and hesitant to perform publicly at school (more so since COVID).
Our middle school started a Mariachi program which has flourished , and allowed the students to come out of their musical 'shell'. I hope to start our students playing the ukulele in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. I hope this will encourage them to perform the same way Mariachi did for the Middle and High School students.
