Orienteering is the skill of land navigation from point to point using a map and magnetic compass only. A compass is needed for the student to be able to orient themselves with the map so that they go in the correct direction.
Students will be assigned a compass to keep for the school year. Students will use the compass both at school and at home. At school the compass is used in the majority of the lessons. They have to have it with them at all times when they are orienteering. It does not matter if they are completing a course on the school grounds or out in the wilderness the students have to have the compass in order to orient their map so that they know they are going in the right direction.
If the students are at home for COVID related issues, I can send a map out electronically and ask many questions about the routes that the students take. I can ask things such as what course heading (degree) is point 1 to point 2. When you reach point 2 what direction is the nearest hill, re-entrant, etc. there is a lot more to compass skill use then most people think. The more comfortable a student is using the compass, the less likely they will get lost.
