Like almost every public high school in Philadelphia, we have no library. Students who want to collaborate, study quietly, or lose themselves in a book have nowhere to be and no single collection of books to choose from.
After four years of planning, designing, and acquiring books, we are LAUNCHING our school’s Reading Room to allow students in grades nine through twelve the place they deserve to read, reflect and research. Although we have a catalogue of over 500 diverse books and more available for donation every day, our school has never had a single space where books can be easily accessed by students. Your donation provides the physical furniture we need to begin creating this space to house our collection, welcome our readers, and provide students with a collaborative study space that is welcoming and professional.
Shelves and chairs may not seem like much, but they are key to beginning to create a library space that will feel welcoming and real, not cobbled together. Philly students too often have their first experience with a library at the college level; help me give our students that space from the first day of ninth grade!
