This first graders have never been in a classroom before and have very little experience of being read to at school and home. These books will continue to enhance the rich literacy classroom that I strive to create. Reading aloud helps students learn how to use language to make sense of the world; it improves their information processing skills, vocabulary, and comprehension. Research has shown that teachers who read aloud motivate students to read. The book bins will allow my students to keep their choice of books in and read independently. The reusable erase pocket sleeves will allow my students to write their daily reading responses.
With these new books, my students will be able to listen and discuss a variety of genres that will allow them to open their mind and develop their imaginative skills, which are so necessary for them to improve critical thinking!
It’s amazing how engaged children seem to be during read-aloud time! My students already have shown an astonishing interest in reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with creative writing and find a love of reading.
