Hello! Thank you for taking the time to read this project. A majority of my students are in a sub-separate autism program and are minimally verbal. They benefit from a lot of visuals (pictures, symbols, topic boards) in order to communicate and show us all the amazing things they know! To date, I have printed and laminated these visuals. This requires a lot of paper and time... they have also become harder to disinfect between students. This project will allow me to have access to all of my students' visuals in one place. This will ensure they are able to comment on lessons, answer questions, make requests, advocate, etc.
Moreover, it will allow me to integrate more technology into sessions (research shows students with autism have a particular affinity for technology!). Lastly, there are some great therapeutic apps that are only compatible for iPads. These apps probe students knowledge of different language elements (e.g., concepts), ensuring I have a more comprehensive understanding of what my minimally verbal students do and do not know! This allows me to make therapy as pertinent and engaging as possible, and will help me limit the amount of paper and therapy items I need to carry with me.
