My students, for this specialized new program, are learning how to deal with their emotions and behaviors throughout the day, to better adjust when they will return to their home school. Tier 3 trauma students, such as these, often have other underlying issues and, more often than not, are visual and tactile learners. So having manipulatives while doing math and science units will increase their engagement and be a welcome break from the emotional workouts they are getting with the other units we cover during our 5-hour straight program.
Giving our tactile learners, as well as others, a welcome break from the emotional and behavioral struggles they address during parts of the day will be valuable.
Many of these students are not on track to attend higher education and many will struggle to graduate, so teaching them how to learn and logic and reasoning skills that they can take with them anywhere is a high priority.
