My school is an 85% free lunch school. My students are often living in poverty in addition to struggling with various learning or cognitive disabilities. Two of the boys in my social group have stated that they feel hopeless and have thoughts of suicide (one is ten and the other eight). I have created the two groups and see the boys during my own lunch period because I feel that helping them find a way to connect with their fellow students will be more important to their success in school and life than any help we can give them with their academics. The boys have defined what friendship is, how it effects and changes your life and are now currently writing scripts that they will shoot, direct, and star in.
