My Newcomer students (students new to the US and new to English) would greatly benefit from having pocket translators. These devices will enable students to have real time voice translation to communicate with teachers and fellow students. Newcomers go through what is known as "the silent period" for several months while they are acquiring basic English skills. These translators will help them have a voice during a time when they feel uncertain. The camera function on these translators will allow them to take pictures of text and have it instantly translated into their native language, making them more able to participate in daily lessons.
