My students have been largely at home for the last couple of years due to COVID-related closures, when in a normal year, they may have been at preschool or going to parks, play areas and library storytimes. They come to me with deficits in many skills, including fine motor and communication. These are both skills that students will need as they begin to learn reading and writing.
Since we can't bring the children to the outside world, I would like to bring the outside world to the children. I would like to do this by adding to our classroom Science center. If funded, the light table and accessories would add Math, ELA, Science, Fine Motor, Social, and many opportunities for Communication as well. The other materials will add some hands on activities to help expand their vocabulary as well as meet MANY of the Nevada Pre-K Standards.
Some specific math skills that I will target with these materials include counting (Math 1.PK.4a), number recognition (Math 1.PK.3a), and shape recognition (Math 4.PK.1a). Some Science skills that I will be targeting include sorting objects by observable properties (Science P.PK.1), using tools safely to observe (Science N.PK.3), and using their five senses to investigate the natural world (Science L.PK.4). These are just a few of the many diverse skills we will be able to teach in a hands on way if our project is funded. Thank you so much for making it happen!
