Teaching complex scientific concepts requires lots of imagery and model examples to describe processes that are too small, too large, or too fast for my students to see in real-time. Moreover, laboratory experiments, while still relevant, can be opportunities for student participation but not necessarily student understanding. Also, digital presentations are limited by the fact that many of them are simply videos that limit the scope of real-life experiences to 2 dimensions.
It is my goal to present complex scientific concepts to my students by allowing them to view interactive programs and demonstrations in virtual reality. By using an Oculus VR headset, I can present complex topics such as nutrient cycling and energy transfer through trophic levels in my Biology classes, as well as, demonstrate the movements and positions of the planets in our solar system in my Earth Space Science classes, just to name a few.
Having a virtual learning space allows me to model these concepts while saving time and money on expensive and fragile models that take up valuable learning space in the classroom.
