Many of my first grade students experienced isolation from their friends during COVID lockdowns and distance learning. As a result they are craving opportunities to talk and work with their classmates. The flexible seating and organizational materials I have chosen will allow students choices in where and how to work productively with their classmates.
Our class has set a goal to create a composting system to help our school reduce waste and benefit the school by supplying compost for our school garden beds. This project will give my students opportunities to work as parnerships and teams that will investigate, problem-solve, and record their discoveries together. It will help them build relationships and give them a sense of purpose and belonging that was missing for students who could not meet in person last year.
Because of various circustances, many of my students need additional help meeting the language arts standards for first grade, especially the foundational skills, such as RF.1.3 (applying phonics to decoding skills) and L1.1 and L1.2 (using conventions of standard English in writing and speaking). The books and other manipulatives I have chosen will give my students the resources they need for hands-on learning while still allowing them to work together.
Our research about composting will not only allow students to practice their language arts skills, but it will also help them forge much-needed emotional bonds with their classmates.
