Nevada Academic Content Standard for Health (4.2.1) states: "List healthy ways of communication/ listening to express needs, wants, and feelings." As stated in the content standards for ELA "While the ELA and content area literacy components described herein are critical to college and career readiness, they do not define the whole of such readiness. Students require a wide-ranging, rigorous academic preparation and, particularly in the early grades, attention to such matters as social, and emotional approaches to learning". By providing my at risk and academically challenged students with a relax and read corner, I believe I will be able to help them learn how to express their emotional wants, needs, and feelings. Through the work books, I will be able to guide them as they navigate their way into their own minds. With the social emotional books, they will have the opportunity to connect with their every day emotions, while also learning important early literacy skills. By doing all of this, in a calm and quiet environment, the students will see their learning needs met.
