Complying with COVID-related guidelines has taken a toll on in-person classrooms. Keeping first graders six feet apart, sanitized, disinfected, and not sharing materials at all times has been challenging. I have learned that organization is key. Not only for the teacher, but it is important for students to learn organization skills as well. Individual materials and storage for each student will not only allow students to take ownership and be responsible, but it will also keep them safe by minimizing cross-contamination.
This pandemic has also taken a toll on student learning. A lack of school exposure has set students back academically. In the attempt of getting my students to become better writers, they have struggles with standard composition journals. First-grade students would benefit from primary writing journals, where lines are wider and they are able to "write" using pictures as well. My students enjoy being "authors" and "illustrators". Primary writing journals will allow them to easily transition between the two rolls.
In this virtual, technology-driven world, teachers are turning to technology to help them teach every day. Teachers spend hundreds of dollars on sites like Teachers Pay Teacher, to purchase engaging intervention kits for their students. The Literacy Set will allow me to hold interventions for my students and have all my materials in one place. No downloading, printing, laminating, cutting, and organizing, but it is all done and in one place.
