Since returning to the building I am trying to engage my learners as much as possible. Understanding that my now 4th grade learners' last normal school year was 1st grade, I truly believe that in order to help them get back on track with their in-person learning, I need to provide hands-on engaging STEAM opportunities where they can effectively collaborate together. My learners have not had the opportunity to be in person during crucial years of their education due to the building closures from the COVID Pandemic.
In our learning studio, we spend a lot of time working on real-world problems in math and science, while getting to know one another better as people; as mathematicians and scientists. I aim to increase their social skills by encouraging them to collaborate together daily.
This STEAM project will help my learners engage in hands-on investigations and experiments. We will explore Energy Transfer through building roller coasters. We will use the engineering design process to design structures that can withstand earthquakes. We will continue reinforcing our multiplication strategies and math facts to help us solve real-world problems, and apply our math concepts to our science investigations. Some of the standards these materials will support include: 4.NBT.A.1, 4.NBT.A.2, 4.NBT.B.4, 4.NBT.B.5, 4-PS3-1, 4-PS3-2, 4-PS3-3, 4-PS3-4, 4-ESS3-1
