The library supports learning across multiple standards and across multiple grade levels. Our students went a long time without access to books and a lot of them lost their passion for reading during the COVID shut-downs and lingering policies . With a large number of reluctant readers, we have instituted a number of reading challenges including a million-word challenge. To encourage everyone to read more and with the help of my 3rd and 4th-grade students, I have carefully selected these books which will have a significant impact on sparking a passion for reading. Having a reluctant reader start with the first book in a series and enjoy it almost guarantees they will read the rest of the series and reach a goal of one million words read by the end of the school year.
With this selection of books, students will be able to choose books they are interested in, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.
The best way to increase reading ability and gain confidence is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. Having a well-stocked library of books the children enjoy also gives them a place to go to regroup, refocus, and be ready to learn.
